Documentary Peeks Inside Heath Ledger’s Joker Diary
We can all agree that Heath Ledger made an outstanding Joker in The Dark Knight. He totally captivated us with his performance, drawing us into the character’s insanity as well as his complete understanding of anarchy. All this coming from an actor whom we perceived was to be typecast as the pretty boy heart throb for many rom-coms to come.
The video below is an excerpt from a documentary series titled Too Young to Die. It features Heath Ledger’s father, Kim Ledger, who talks about how his son prepared for his role in The Dark Knight. He is seen flipping through Heath’s journal, which features many hand written notes such as the entire hospital monologue, a picture of Malcolm McDowell in A Clockwork Orange, clippings from Batman comic books, and much more. This journal alone gives the viewer a glimpse of just how deep he got into his version of the Joker’s mind. His father goes on to say, “In order to inhabit his character, he locked himself up in a hotel room for weeks. He would do that. He liked to dive into his characters, but this time he really took it up a notch.”
